Kulim, Kedah, July 31, 2008 (Thursday) — Immediately after the opening of Fuji Electric (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd.’s second plant on June 7, 2007, Fuji Electric Device Technology Co., Ltd. continues its endeavor to materialize its second plan in Malaysia, i.e., to establish a new semiconductor wafer fabrication plant here in the following year.

This decision comes with a total of MYR 600 million-investment on building, clean room facilities, and equipments. The newly completed double storey plant houses fully integrated production lines from wafer chip production to Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) assembly.

From April 1, 2008, the operation of IGBT assembly lines is officially begun. There will be a total of 4 IGBT assembly lines fully operated by the end of fiscal year 2008, with the capacity of producing 50,000-65,000 units of IGBT power modules by each line per month. The sophisticated and state-of-the-art clean room with semi-automated processes will eventually double up its monthly production volume to serve greater market needs globally.

By year 2009, the new plant will also begin its wafer fabrication production to manufacture the silicon wafer chip for IGBT assembly in house. This will, in turn, save the manufacturing and transportation costs in silicon wafer chip making significantly (compared to if they were manufactured elsewhere) and hence, deliver our IGBT power module products to our customers at lower price without compromising the high quality. Therefore, by the end of year 2009, the silicon wafer chip production will reach approximately 15,000 volumes per month to fulfill the demands from IGBT assembly in house and from Japan.

Thanks to the stable economic, political and social climate in Malaysia, Fuji Electric Device Technology Co., Ltd. boldly decides to set up its first overseas plant of wafer fabrication production with fully integrated production from front-end to back-end in Malaysia. By doing so, the advantages are not only benefited to the investor, but also to the surrounding local communities. New job opportunities are created, not to mention the skills and technology of this advanced product which would also be transferred to local technical professionals.
The continued investment from Fuji Electric Device Technology Co., Ltd. is a clear evidence of the company supports to Malaysia’s sosio-economic growth. As stated by Mr. Yanagisawa Kuniaki, the Senior Director of Semiconductor Production Group in Japan,

” A strategic location, good infrastructure, a large pool of skilled workers, stable social and political environment and relatively low cost ensure that Malaysia will always remain competitive.”

Mr. Yanagisawa would also like to put on record that the cooperation extended to Fuji Electric by the Malaysian Government, the Kedah State Government and Kulim Hi-Tech Park Corporation has been excellent from the day the first Media plant is established in 1999.  This is certainly one of the major factors in the decision to expand Fuji Electric’s investment in this country.

With these supports, Fuji Electric will continue to strive for its best and return to the community it serves.
